The tour continued to Montjuic Park, which is a large park that was first created in 1929 for the International Exhibition. Shortly after its creation the park fell into general disuse and became a synonymous with decline. As Manuel would say, it became quite dodgy. The park was the main site of the 1992 Olympics and got the polish that it needed prior to the ’92 games.
Within the park is the Font Magica that we visited our first night, many gardens and walk ways, several Olympic venues, and spectacular views of the city and port below. We ended up at Castell de Montujic.
Getting off the bus we were faced with two choices, walk up to the Castel or take a gondola. We opted for the later and for a mere 9.50 e each we were on our way up. This was not only an efficient way to trek up the hill, but also had breathtaking views. We worked up an appetite on our trek up to the castle and decided to stop at one of the many small cafes in the park. Here we shared a chicken and tomato empanada, which we enjoyed very much.
Magnificent gardens surrounded the castle and even though we could not walk through them, we were able to take many pictures of them from breathtaking views from above. We also got a chance while at the castle to man the cannons and protect our majesty from foreign invaders. We conversed on how rough it must have been for the king and queen to live in such squallier with a horrendous view in every direction, saying that really their only worry was being invaded overthrown and then killed. The castle had been synonymous for death because it was the place where political prisoners were tortured and then killed after the Spanish civil war. It’s ironic to say now that the castle is a center for international peace, a slight change of ideals.
We hopped back on the Red Route to finish the third and final part of our two-day tour routes. It was apparent that we were running out of gusto and decided to head back to the hotel to recharge. As we were walking back to the hotel we came a cross a small bakery, El Mos, and decided to get a small snack for the terrace (we really love to eat). We decided on a turkey sandwich and a cheese baguette and a prosciutto cheese pizza/sandwich combo (see photo). The food was delicious and we couldn’t decide which one we liked better. After each bite we were convinced that was our favorite until we had a bite of the other. You probably think that all we do is eat especially after reading this post but the truth is that we have decided to adopt the European style (that’s us rationalizing our continuous eating) of eating and have many smaller meals throughout the day instead of fewer bigger meals.
