August 21

On August 21, 2012 we found out I was pregnant and that our family was going to grow and our life with children was going to start. On August 21, 2014 we welcomed our beautiful Rylan Paul to complete our family. Words cannot express how in love we are with her. While I was pregnant, I wasn’t sure that my heart could grow any bigger, because I had so much love in it for Jared and Jackson, that it wasn’t possible for there to be more room to love. Well, it is possible! I spent our first night in the hospital unable to sleep because I just kept looking at her and couldn’t believe she was ours!

As you read in my last post, Rylan didn’t give mommy the easy pregnancy that Jackson did. Everything was opposite!! While the labor’s started very similar, they couldn’t have been more different. With Jackson I had an appointment with Dr. Tripp, went home and my water broke around 6:30. With Rylan, I had an appointment with Dr. Tripp, went home and started having contractions around 6:30. I am thinking PERFECT!! I put on the same outfit I had on with Jackson, right down to the sports bra . . .I mean let’s keep things the same right!!

The contractions weren’t regular, so we weren’t sure if it was the real deal or not. Around 10:00 we decided to bring Jackson to Jared’s parents because we had a feeling it was going to happen that night or early the next morning. We hurried home and went right to bed, I was able to doze in-between contractions and thanks to an app that I downloaded, Jared was off the hook of having to time my contractions and was able to get a good night sleep.

We got up early the next morning and when they were close to 3 minutes apart we decided to head to the hospital. We got there around 7:30 and that is when things just started to go in the opposite direction. One positive was I was already 5 cm dilated! We were in triage for over an hour because they didn’t have a clean room.  I found out I was GBS positive (its an infection that doesn’t impact adults, but can be bad for the baby) – again didn’t have this with Jackson (very different pregnancy). All GBS + means is that I had to have an antibiotic prior to deliver. The problem with that is I am allergic to penicillin (the only antibiotic that is recognized by the American Pediatric Association) so because they had to give me an “unrecognized” antibiotic (even though all the docs and nurses said it was a stronger antibiotic) they had to wait 4 hours before they did anything to help induce labor. . .break my water.

I finally got into a room around 8:30 and got the antibiotic at 10:00. This is when I was delivered the news of them not being able to break my water until 2:00. I was also checked by Dr. Tripp and was still at 5 cm. . .a little discouraging as I have been breathing through contractions for close to two hours. I tried my best to stay positive and crossed my fingers that it would break on it’s own. I was lucky to have a wonderful nurse, at one point she suggested that I hop in the shower, and it was a blessing, the heat and water really helped ease the pain of each contraction. She also suggested bouncing on a yoga ball and leaning against the end of the bed on my hands and knees to help position the baby. Those of you who know me well, know how task and goal oriented I am, so I broke each hour up into segments rotating between the shower, ball, bed, walking. According to Jared time was flying by.

Finally 2:00 came and it was water break time. I was told that Dr. Tripp would be down in 2 minutes to do it, well his 2 minutes means 20 and at 2:20 he finally broke my water, I was only 7 cm, again not too encouraging. 2 cm in 4 hours, I mean I went 3 cm in 40 minutes with Jackson, but my water was broke with him. Well the “breaking of the bag” as they call it, was all I needed, by 2:15 I was 9 cm. My nurse told me that we were going to have be ready to push in 15 minutes, again a goal, all I needed to hear. Sure enough, by 3:25 I was ready to push, and less then 10 minutes later I heard Dr. Tripp ask Jared, “Well dad, what is it?” and I heard the words I had been waiting for “It’s aaa (yes he hesitated) GIRL!!”

Rylan Paul Twamley was born at 3:34 pm, after 8 hours of active labor (21 hours total). She weighed in at exactly 8 lbs and was 20 ½ inches long. She has a beautiful head full of black hair and in our opinion she couldn’t be more perfect!! Gigi (what Jackson call’s my mom) won the Baby Parley with 6 correct answers.

Baby Rylan

I spent most of the first day and night looking at her in shock, not believing that a-she is mine and b-she is a she. Thankfully my mom has a shopping problem and showed up the next morning with several bags of girl clothing. Once we got her in pink it started to sink in a little bit more!
