We have had some many wonderful meals in Sorrento that we were quite excited (and sad at the same time) for dinner. The front desk suggested two places, one with an outside terrace and so-so food and one that was inside, had live music and exceptional food. We went for the music and the food and ended up at Tavern Allegra.
The video does a great job describing the surroundings of the restaurant. No we were not outside, but it was as if we were in an old wine cellar, it was really neat. The music was a perfect touch, not too loud or over-whelming and a perfect mix of Italian and Italian American (Like That’s A’ more and a couple Beatles covers)
They started us with a glass of nice dry champagne from the region and some bread. We ordered a bottle of white wine; tonight it only took two bottles. The first one the sever took away because there were some cork pieces in Tina’s glass; the server left Jared’s glass that we both sipped on until the new bottle arrived. We noticed a distinct taste difference between the two glasses; thankfully we liked the new bottle better.
We ordered a mozzarella and prosciutto plate to start with, again it was delicious. I know you are thinking that it is such a simple selection, we would be thinking the same thing a month ago, but it was scrumptious. Jared ordered a filet with a peppercorn sauce, the difference from the last one being how it was cooked. In Sorrento they cook their steaks by giving them a flour dusting and then baking them. It was very different from a grilled steak, but at the same time delicious, it was as if you got more of the meat taste versus the grilled taste.
Tina ordered the seafood risotto; again it came out different than expected. It was a true rice dish with TONS of seafood. It had muscles, clams, squid, octopus, and probably other sea creatures we were not even aware of. The surprising thing was it did not have any cheese or cream in it like we are used to back in the US. It was delicious and very flavorful. Both meals were different from what we had expected, but blew our taste buds. We slowly enjoyed our meal and some more music before heading back to the hotel.
