We wanted to explore the Amalfi Coast line and decided to again take Gaitano’s recommendation of getting there by boat. He said the bus drivers are crazy and after our experience in Capri we knew he had to be right. We were told that the ticket booth opened at 9:00 and the cruise started at 9:30.
Again, Tina wanted to make sure we got good seats so we planned on getting there a little after 9 to buy tickets. At that time we found the boat, S. Valentino, and went to see if we could board, you know to get primo seating. We could board but not until 9:30, see boarding starts at 9:30 and the cruise doesn’t leave until 10:05. You will see the picture of Jared waiting; it was a test of true love because we were close to an hour early.
The good news is we devised a plan as we waited. We knew the direction that the boat had to go in to go down the coast, so we knew what side of the boat to sit on this time. We decided to try and get seats under a covering so we weren’t in the sun. Finally it came time to board and we got our primo seating. Below you will find an outline of our day.
9:30 – Boarding on S. Valentino from Sorrento harbor
10:05 – Departure from Sorrento to Capri (no we didn’t go there again, just keep reading)
10:55 – Arrival at Green Grotto. Stop for a swim.
11:30 – Go around to see I Faraglioni and departure to Positano. On the way you can admire the bay of “leranto” and the magnificent islands of the Mermaids “il Galli”
12:40 – Arrival in Positano. Passengers have a chance for an optional visit or shopping (this stop excludes the possibility of visiting Almafi) **This is where we got off**
Let’s go back to when we swam for just a minute. Swimming near the green grotto was amazing the water was so clear you could see at least 10 feet down and across. The water was also very refreshing.
Ok, now back to when we got off at Positano. We saw enough of the coastline and wanted time to enjoy the town, grab some lunch and maybe some time at the beach, so that is why we decided to get off. If we stayed on we would have only have had a little over an hour in Almafi.
After climbing up a couple hundred steps we were determined to find somewhere to eat that had a view. We did at Café Positano Restaurant and Bar. We were seated right against the railing overlooking the harbor of Positano. We enjoyed a lunch with an exceptional view (we only had to pay 4 euros for a cover charge). Tina ordered what she refers to as mozzarella sticks on crack. The menu called them prosciutto croquettes. Now you may remember us order croquettes our first night in Barcelona and they were just so-so, well that is because Italians didn’t make them. These croquettes had fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, and fresh herbs. They literally melted in your mouth. Jared ordered homemade pasta (we learned that if it is not homemade in Italy than it is a bad sign for the restaurant) with prawns (or shrimp to us Americans) in a light wine sauce. It was equally delicious and topped off with an amazing view.
There was also a little show as Tina accidently knocked her knife off of the table, it made a loud noise as it hit the floor. The restaurant went quiet, and it then proceeded to fall off the balcony (we were that close to the edge) and land on a metal roof with another loud ting. Feeling somewhat embarrassed she apologized to the other diners and then noticed various pieces silverware on the roof below.
After lunch we headed back down to the port area to enjoy some time on the beach, we had a little over an hour and a half to relax. The beaches here were also rock breaches just like the ones in Nice. As we lay on our “borrowed” towel from the hotel Tina started to collect sea glass as Jared was swimming. We both quickly became obsessed with collecting sea glass and started collecting as much as we could. The water here was the clearest yet, you could see at least 10 feet down to the bottom with no problem. When it was time to go we had a hefty collection of see glass, so we packed everything up and of course stopped for a gelato before getting back on the boat. This time we settled on vanilla with chocolate chips and laces of nutella throughout, the best yet!
